While batting in the 6th inning of a game against the Chicago White Sox Al Kaline was hit in the back of the head by an errant pitch from Bob Shaw, subsequently knocking him out. Kaline had already collected two hits on the day before being struck by the pitch.
Kaline had to be carted off the field via stretcher. Luckily, after being taken to the hospital and undergoing a set of x-rays everything came back negative. There was quite the scare that Kaline would have to miss the remainder of the season, however, he would miss only one game returning on September 27th.
Kaline would finish the 1958 season .313/.374/.478 with 170 total hits on the season including 34 doubles and 16 homeruns. He would also collect more walks than strikeouts on the year; 54 and 47 respectively. Kaline was also an All-Star and Gold Glove winner and finished 20th in the MVP vote.
