As the Tigers gear up for another challenging offseason, Detroit Sports Addiction has put together a crucial “Offseason Wish List” to guide the team towards a successful upcoming season. There are five key areas that we feel the Tigers need to address to strengthen their roster and make another playoff push in 2025.

  1. Add 2 Starting Pitchers

  2. Address Third Base

  3. Add a Catcher

  4. Address First Base

Stay tuned for our final installment next week, heading into the Winter Meetings, as we dive into each of these priorities and explore potential free agent solutions that could help propel the Detroit Tigers to a deep playoff run.

Address First Base

Solidifying first base needs to be a primary goal during the offseason. Here are a few potential candidates:

Christian Walker

  • Current Status: UFA (Declined Qualifying Offer)

  • Contract Estimate: 3 years/ $60m ($20m/yr)

  • 2024 Stats: 2.3 WAR, 120 Hits, 24 HR, 84 RBI, .251 BA, .335 OBP, .803 OPS, 121 OPS+

  • Potential Fit: Staring First Baseman

  • Signing Likelihood: Low-Moderate

    • Walker would be an immediate upgrade from Spencer Torkelson, providing a right-handed power bat and solid defense with 14 OAA in 2024. As a 3-time Gold Glove winner, his defensive prowess is unquestionable. However, his age (34) and the fact that he has already declined Arizon’’s qualifying offer could complicate negotiations.

Pete Alonso

  • Current Status: UFA (Declined Qualifying Offer)

  • Contract Estimate: 7 years/$242m ($34.5m/yr)

  • 2024 Stats: 2.6 WAR, 146 Hits, 34 HR, 88 RBI, .240 BA, .329 OBP, .788 OPS, 123 OPS+

  • Potential Fit: Starting First Baseman

  • Signing Likelihood: Low

    • The length and cost of the estimated contract are likely beyond the current ownerships spending mentality. While his offensive capabilities would greatly enhance the lineup, his defensive profile is quite similar to Spencer Torkelson, which might make the investment less attractive.

Paul goldschmidt

  • Current Status: UFA

  • Contract Estimate: 1 year/$15m

  • 2024 Stats: 1.3 WAR, 147 Hits, 22 HR, 65 RBI, .245 BA, .203 OBP, .716 OPS, 98 OPS+

  • Potential Fit: Starting First Baseman

  • Signing Likelihood: Low-Moderate

    • Goldschmidt could bring valuable veteran presence and playoff experience to the Tigers, enhancing both the roster and the clubhouse. As a former MVP and multiple Gold Glove winner, he would be a strong mentor for Torkelson. His age (37) is a key factor in contract negotiations, but options like a vesting or player option could make the deal more appealing.

Wade Lamonte Jr

  • Current Status: Arbitration Eligible (Arb 3), Rumored to be on Trade Block

  • Contract Estimate: Arbitration 3, $4.3m

  • 2024 Stats: 2.1 WAR, 86 Hits, 8 HR, 34 RBI, .260 BA, .380 OBP, .761 OPS, 121 OPS+

  • Potential Fit: Platoon First Base with Torkelson

  • Trade Likelihood: Low-Moderate

    • He appears to align well with the team’s current strategy, emphasizing control of the strike zone and a high walk rate. He represents a cost-effective solution in terms of salary and trade value, potential requiring only a mid-level prospect. His addition could bolster the position and add depth to the roster.

The offseason will be pivotal for the Tigers, securing the right first baseman could set the tone for further success in 2024.
